The National 3 Peaks Challenge

The National 3 Peaks Challenge

The National 3 Peaks Challenge is our most popular corporate event and with good reason. Trekking to the summits of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon with just the drive time between to recover is achievable with a reasonable level of fitness but still takes preparation and commitment. Completing the Challenge in the 24 hour time is tough but ultimately this isn’t about the stopwatch – its about the challenge, its about the team spirit that only the mountains can nurture, its about raising money for your business’ sponsored charity and all the publicity that comes with it.

Fitways Adventures are experts at organising and running National 3 Peaks events. We cater for teams of any size from 10 to over 40 trekkers. Our most popular packages have been detailed below, however if you have different requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll be delighted to discuss the best option for you.

NOTES ON TRAVEL

There is an excellent rail service to Chester Train Station, so many clients take this option rather than driving – you’ll almost certainly get home quicker!  If you are planning to drive, keep in mind you’ll be extremely tired after you’ve completed the challenge so we’d recommend taking a break before you commence your onward journey.

You can save money on rail travel by booking your tickets in advance using www.thetrainline.com. If booking fixed tickets, we recommend that you leave plenty of time in case of delays – either during the challenge, or on the journey back.

TRAVEL, TIMINGS & LOGISTICS

It’s possible to tackle the 3 Peaks Challenge from North to South or the other way round depending on your location. When booking we will agree with you the optimum route given your location.
The time taken to complete the challenge is calculated by adding your team’s mountain (walking) time to the travel time (i.e. there may be scope to split groups on the mountain depending on how things are going).  Historically the challenge aims to be completed in 24 hours. In order to achieve this, you need a good level of fitness and a lot of mountain and hill walking experience.
As far as possible we will try to keep to the times, however, it is impossible to predict what may happen on our way and difficult weather conditions can have a big impact on our timings.

ACCOMMODATION (FORT WILLIAM, SCOTLAND)

Fort William is an extremely popular destination during the 3 Peaks Season. Accommodation is usually booked well in advance.  This means it is not possible to guarantee any specific hotel if you do opt to upgrade but we will do our very best to accommodate your needs.
Included: Basic hostel type accommodation.
Medium quality option: Basic hotel, typically 3*, approximately £30pp extra (Travelodge, Premier Inn)
High quality option: Quality hotel, typically 4*, approximately £50pp extra

FITWAYS ADVENTURES & THE ENVIRONMENT

Consideration of the environment is at the heart of what we do at Fitways and we do everything within our power to minimise our impact upon it. This includes:

  • Small group sizes
  • Sticking to main paths
  • Picking up litter – it is our policy to enhance any area we visit
  • Safe driving – keeping to all driving regulations and encouraging transport sharing
  • Donation to Mountain Rescue on every 3 Peaks Challenge
  • We aim to complete Scafell before midnight (in consideration of nearby residents)
  • Obeying the Countryside Code. This is part of our team briefing.

MOUNTAIN TRAINING DAYS

The National 3 Peaks Challenge should never be underestimated, even your guides will be shattered by the end! Simply turning up on the day with a pair of brand new boots and a ‘hope for the best’ attitude is unlikely to end well.
There is a saying in mountaineering that the best way to prepare for climbing a mountain is to climb a mountain. While training in a gym, or going for long walks on the flat is good for developing base fitness, there is no replacement for spending several hours on terrain similar to what you will encounter during an event.  The benefits of attending a mountain training day can be seen below:

  1. You will quickly learn if the 3 Peaks is the challenge for you
  2. It will give you an opportunity to assess your current fitness level
  3. The perfect opportunity to test your equipment
  4. The optimum training to prepare for your event
  5. To spend mountain time with your team mates
  6. Meet your leaders and ask any questions

To book onto a mountain training day please visit our mountain training page or contact us and we will be more than happy to help.

TESTIMONIALS

On behalf of the HPE team I would just like to say a few words. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that it was an amazing weekend and an unforgettable experience! This would not have happened without your team’s great leadership and expertise. It was certainly a well organized event and there was not anything overlooked from your part. Not only was it a fantastic challenge but it was really enjoyable with the groups we had. I think that it was a fantastic achievement for everyone to complete the challenge.
Charles Kemp (Hewlett Packard Enterprise)

I would like to say a huge THANK YOU for all the hard work you and your team put into making the 3 Peaks Challenge so enjoyable! It was an amazing experience and I loved every minute of it! Also, a big thank you to Hazel and Jerry for supporting and looking after our team during the challenge!
Agota Loscher (Hewlett Packard Enterprise)

3 PEAKS FINISHED, 4 of us finished in a total time of 21:29, 31 minutes under our target of sub 22:00. Final Snowdon ascent in a personal best of 2:29. Mission Accomplished! Exhausted – no sleep but Amazing experience, thanks to Nick Hollis and Simon Jones at Fitways adventures, we broke their previous 3 Peaks course record of 22:40! Booom!
Lee Carnaby (MD Crossfit Maidenhead)

Just a quick note to thank you and your team for the amazing experience this weekend. I was getting quite nervous when hearing of the severe conditions on Nevis and potential risks, but the more you spoke about equipment needs etc, just  proved to me and assured me that with you it would be totally safe. I then had the confidence and assurance to do it – that it would be ok – and it was. I was so impressed with your professionalism, your first- hand experience, knowledge and approach. It certainly gave me much assurance, I knew I was in good hands. I would not do this, or recommend anyone do this, with any company other than yours. This is serious stuff!
Lynne Hutchinson (Hewlett Packard Enterprise)

If anyone fancies doing 3 Peaks in 3 days or Kilimanjaro or similar I can heartily recommend Nick Hollis and Fitways who looked after my party brilliantly with professionalism, courtesy, informative and fun to be with.
