Who the course is for:

This course is perfect for people who have no navigation experience at all. The course will start with a warm welcome and take you through the fundamentals of Navigation in an easy to understand manner. This course is very practical and we will be outdoors for much of the day, so please come prepared with the necessary clothing and equipment. At Fitways Adventures, we like our courses to be relevant and fun, so during the day we will be venturing deep into the mountains of the Brecon Beacons.

Course Location

The courses detailed are scheduled to be delivered in the Brecon Beacons.  However, we would be delighted to run navigation courses in other regions such as Snowdonia, The Lake District or an area of your choice.  If you would like to discuss course options in other locations, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

1 Day Beginner Course

You will leave this course with the confidence to plan a walk, venture out on your own and know what to do if anything goes wrong. Don’t expect to be an expert after just one day – this takes a lot of practice, but you will have a foundation that you can take away and build on. On the course we’ll be covering:

  • Outdoor Clothing & Equipment – please ensure you view the equipment list below
  • Introduction to a compass and how it’s used (maps & compasses provided)
  • Introduction to Maps – scales, keys, distances and contour lines
  • Taking a bearing from a map and walking on it
  • Route Planning (how to plan a great day out simply by looking at the map)
  • Grid references (this is the part that got everyone confused at school!)
  • Pacing and timing
  • Where you are allowed to walk (you can find this out by simply looking at the map)
  • Emergency procedures – what to do if you get lost or have a problem
  • Basic night navigation (2 day course only)
  • Practice, Practice & more Practice

Included in the price

  • Safety Briefing
  • Packed Lunch
  • Fully qualified Mountain Leader who will be instructing you during the day
  • Comprehensive navigation course as described
  • 15% discount voucher for Cotswold Outdoor stores

2 Day Beginner Course

Day 1

The first day will be identical to the 1 day course. However, there is a twist. After dinner in the evening, we will be heading back out into the mountains where you will be introduced to the basics of night navigation. During this 2 hour exercise, you will practice some of the skills you learned during the day, in complete darkness. This is a great skill to develop as it will give you the confidence to cope if weather conditions deteriorate, or of course if you don’t complete your walk before darkness falls.

Day 2

During the second day, we will practice the skills we learned the previous day/evening. On this day, we will take a real mountain walk, which you will plan (using a map) and take turns leading the group along the walk. Your leader will be on hand to help out at any stage, and will throw in fun navigational challenges to drive home the skills you have been learning. While the courses will be delivered in an extremely professional manner (the core of Fitways Adventures) you will be encouraged to enjoy yourselves in the mountains.
